Kindle Fire – Most Desired Holiday Wish-List Item, Apple iPad Sales Plunge

amazon kindle fire

The Amazon Kindle Fire is truly the iPad killer product that is crushing down the sales of the Apple iPad. No other tablet PC was able to compete with the Apple iPad. Even Samsung’s Galaxy Tab which is more features than the iPad was unable to bring down the sales of the iPad. However, the Amazon Kindle Fire that was released in November 2011 has already managed to surpass the sales of iPad. The Kindle Fire is considered to be the most desired holiday wish-list item.

Related Story : Is Kindle Fire really good? Can it beat iPad in popularity?

One of the main reasons why the Kindle Fire has become so famous in short period is the fact that it is available at a very affordable price as compared to the iPad. The sales of the Apple iPad has shooting down from 16 million to 13 million and this is mainly happening during the holiday season of December when the iPad’s sales were expected to grow even more. The release of the Kindle Fire in the month of November 2011 was timed perfectly to attract the oncoming vacation season. Over 1 million Kindle Fire is sold every week.

The vice-president of Amazon Kindle Fire, Dave Limp has stated that the Kindle Fire is the most successful product that they have ever launched. They are making great efforts to build new Kindle Fire units to meet the high demand. Even though the Kindle Fire received ambiguous reviews at the beginning, it is managed to hit high sales in no time.

There are several reasons why Apple iPad has failed miserably to compete with Kindle Fire. One of the main reasons is its price. When you compare the price of both the products, you can notice that anyone can afford a Kindle Fire rather than owning an iPad. The original iPad is still not available in many countries and still Apple managed to launch the iPad 2. The original iPad and the iPad 2 are still priced high. The sales of iPad are increasing but it cannot compete with the Kindle Fire.

When you want to gift a Kindle Fire, you only need to spend 200USD whereas to gift to an iPad, you need to spend 500USD. It has been observed that many people are looking cheap tablets to buy. While searching for cheap tablets, people often come across the Kindle Fire. Since the product has a very famous brand backing it and is available at a cheaper price than iPad, the sales are bound to shoot high.

Some people do not like to compare iPad and the Kindle Fire. The iPad has a mammoth screen size of 10 inches whereas the Kindle Fire has a comparatively smaller screen of 7 inches. The Kindle Fire is just an eBook reader and it can be used for watching movies, listening to music and browsing the web. The iPad functions more like a laptop. You should be clear about the fact the Kindle Fire is not an alternative product to the iPad. In simpler terms, Kindle Fire offers basic entertainment features that cannot match the feature rich iPad.

4 Cool and Free android applications which will replace your other gadgets

Here in this article I am going to mention 4 coolest free android applications which will spice up your android mobile phone. Check out the 4 coolest android applications below.

Free Android Applications

Flashlight

Flashlight is a great android application which is available at free of cost for your android mobile phone. You can download this application from the android market at free of cost. When you launch this application your phone camera LED will come on and light your way.

Once you have opened this application keep your finger at the bottom and move from bottom to top and the bulb starts glowing and if you want to turn off the bulb just move your finger from top to bottom.

Important thing to be kept in mind while using this application is that before moving on to your phone’s home screen switch off the bulb. This is because if you don’t turn off your bulb your battery will soon die. This application is most dependable on Motorola phones, but it also works on some other mobile phone as well.

Tape Recorder

There are many recording android applications are available for android but I recommend the free RecForge Lite and its $6 big sibling, RecForge. With the Lite version you can record for less than 3 mins for each recording.

AS a default the sounds that you record will be saved in the format as .mp3 files. If you want you can save the file in the formats like .wav or .ogg file by changing the settings. You can choose to record the sounds in mono or in two- track stereo.

Once you have done your recording you can attach a further recording at the end and you can convert it into another format and if you want you can share it via Gmail, text message or Bluetooth. In Recforge Version you can edit the audio.

TV Remote Control

I wish I could use my android phone into a universal remote. But it doesn’t happen any time soon. The problem behind this is that the phones don’t emit the infrared signals, which are the preferred interface between the device and the remote.

This Wi-Fi remote neatly controls the boxee set top box.  By switching on your Wi-Fi connection on your mobile you can control the device over LAN.

If you have attached your Pc with your TV so that you can see all the movies and also the TV shows Via Boxee account, this program allows your phone to access a remote control.

Remote Keyboard and Mouse

By using your Android phone you control your computer. The open source RemoteDroid makes use of the network and the java to ast to another keyboard and mouse for your computer. Initially you must install the Java SE runtime on your PC and then run the RemoteDroid Server software and also you must turn on your android phone’s Wi-Fi and get it onto the network.

Once you have done those steps, you will find the UI minimal but intuitive: the big rectangle as a touchpad, the 2 small rectangles are the buttons and the keyboard icon brings the keyboard.

Unfortunately RemoteDroid doesn’t support Swype. But still it allows you to control your PC without touching it.

Google Android Beats Apple iPhone

On Monday, Market trends monitor Nielson Company has released a report stating, “Before the close of 2011, several numbers of Smart Phones will be released in the U.S compared to the low featured mobiles.”

The report has also noted that the growth of Android OS from Google is increasing really fast and during the last 6 months, it has become better than the iPhone OS from Apple even with latest subscribers.

Though even with the new spike, the iPhone platform still considered as the SmartPhone that is popular among customers. The report from Neilson says that, “Considering the current subscribers who are all thinking to switch their mobile phones, 90 % of the iPhone users do not want to change their handset.” The report also said that, “29 % of Blackberry and 21 % of Android users have thought to switch to iPhone.”

Business Insider’s Dan Frommer stated that, “the main disadvantage of the iPhone could be that it is works only with one service provider, AT&T. But, the Android and Blackberry handsets can be used with any service providers.”

On Monday, an online research company, Canalys stated that, the sales of the Android (smart phones) handsets have increased to 88.6 % by the 2nd quarter of the 2010. The company added that, the overall growth of the SmartPhone market has increased by 64 % at the same time.

Nokia as well, has got a major part to play in the smart phones field around the globe. The report has stated that, Nokia has influenced a 38 % share in the world’s market of smart phones, by selling a record number of 24 million handsets in the 2nd quarter.

Samsung Epic 4G: Pros and Cons

The Android running Smartphone, Samsung Epic 4G is the 2nd handset in the Sprint’s list to have WiMax support(1st is a slider QWERTY handset HTC Evo 4G), will be ready for launch at the end of this month.

Pros of Samsung Epic 4G

  • Notable features of the phone are 5 MP Camera, the front end VGA camera for video chatting, an mobile hotspot functionalities.

    Samsung epic 4G

  • Unpredictably light: The Epic 4G weighs only 5.5 ounces because of the slide out keypad adding an extra ounce and the thickness will only be few tenths of an inch. Its a reasonable sized mobile that weighs unbelievably less.  It will be launched on August 31 and you will get a 2 year Sprint contract for 249$, after mail in rebate of 100$.
  • Dazzling display: The Epic 4G sports 4” inch screen size that works on Super AMOLED technology, which gives HQ colour images better than a Standard AMOLED technology. Super AMOLED images look well indoor but outdoor it looks dim.
  • Soft, Silky performance: The 1GHZ powered Hummingbird allows you to swap across the home screen and menus real fast. Windows opened swiftly and Switching between portrait and landscape mode will happen pretty quick in no time.
  • Lovely QWERTY keypad: The QWERTY pad slides across in soft and elastic way. There are 5 rows of keys with a row for numbers alone. There is no dedicated @ key and the space key looks small.
  • You can have them for sure: The executives from Sprint say that the Epic 4G may not be able to beat the sales of Evo 4G. The interest shown by people is not the same like before (during the launch of Evo 4G). So, all the demands of customers can be satisfied(everybody can get their handsets without any delay).

Samsung epic 4G picture

Cons of Samsung Epic 4G

  • Ships with Android 2.1, not 2.2: Epic 4G runs on Android 2.1 only and not on Android 2.2, which means it has no Flash support. It seems Samsung and Sprint has not taken any steps to upgrade the Epic 4G to Android 2.2 Froyo, as the release date is nearing.
  • Cost is high (50$ more): Be ready with 350$ to buy the Epic 4G (249 $ for contract and 00$ for mail in rebate). This is 50$ more than HTC Evo 4G. The reason given by executives for this is that the Epic 4G has got premium hardware making it a premium handset.
  • Add on fee of $10/month “Premium Data” 4G tax: It will cost you 69$ for voice and data plans and for the 4G add on fee of 10$ will have to be paid every month, regardless of any place you are situated. The reason for 10$ extra was that the Evo and Epic users use more data compared to other handset users.
  • Battery life: Just like the Evo 4G, the Epic 4G handset’s battery may get harmed when the handset is used in areas having weak 4G signal. If you live in 4G coverage area, no problem, but if you are in a place having 3G coverage only, it is better switch off the 4G antenna to conserve your battery charge and life.

HP Zeen Slate, powered by Android

“‘HP is going to release a tablet soon, the ‘eStation Zeen’”, which was evident from FCC document files recently. The tablet is believed to work on the Android platform and can take print outs of eBooks and documents directly from the tablet device on to the HP printer.

HP Slate Zeen

The only information that was given by FCC documents about eStation Zeen is that the device is a tablet that will be having Wi-Fi connectivity and HP logo on it. No other information about the eStation Zeen was specified in the document. But some other information about the device came out as a rumour.

Snippet information: The eStation (will not run on Windows OS or WebOS from Palm, which was recently acquired by them) will work on the Android 2.1. Actually, the eStation alone is not the only tablet that HP is having ready.  But, this android running eStation will be accompanied by its companions in the upcoming months, Windows 7 running tablets termed as HP Slate and WebOS running tablets termed as PalmPad (rumoured). The rumour about Zeen is that it works only on Android 2.1 and may be upgraded to the latest Android 2.2 Froyo version even before its launch.

The eStation Zeen’s main intention is to function as an e-reader and it has now made a partnership with the eBook store Barnes & Noble Nook. Based on the information from Engadget’s spy was that, the tablet will also have a Camera and MicroSD slot.

The main functionality (which is not present in the iPad) of this Zeen is the facility to transfer files to the HP printer (in particular, HP Zeus Printer) directly. The combo of the HP Zeus Printer and the Zeen may be available for 399 $. The Zeen will be capable to work with the Zeus (not sure if it is wired or wireless) and will behave as a strong interface for the Printer, which was clued by many HP executives long before.

The engadget stated that, “that is all we have got and due to a secrecy request, we cannot reveal other major information from the FCC filing on HP, for the time being”. This leaves us wondering about the other capabilities of the eStation Zeen and the cost in which the tablet will be available without the printer.

This Tablet, which is capable of sending files or ebooks for printing to a printer directly was expected from the HP and is sure to open new doors for you. But, the ability of the Zeen to send huge sized ebooks to the printer for taking print outs is still a mystery. Also, I can’t understand the need for taking large volume of print out copies and wasting of time or money, when you already have the e-reader on your hand (else buy the printed book directly from the shop).

There are several talks and unverified news on release of Samsung Tab, the Dell Streaks, the PalmPad and RIM’s Blackpad, which makes the e-reader market a place for serious competition.

Android- Dumbest | Flop | Useless Applications

The total number of good downloads almost equals up to total number of bad downloads in the Android Market. Nearly 60,000 apps are available for Android devices. High Quantity doesn’t mean High Quality. There are nearly 19 apps that are waste of time.

The apps are varying from worse to danger. Some are ambiguous and undeveloped apps.

Google android useless applications

Type N Walk: This application is available at free of cost. By using this you can type while you are walking. This app allows you to see what is in front of you while you are typing. This application is using the android phone’s camera and overlay the text messages over the view while you are typing and walking, So that you may fall into a pit which is outside the viewing area of the camera.

Flight Deck– Artificial Horizon: This application is available for free. This application developer says that I am a private pilot and I designed this app as a back-up artificial horizon while I am flying. This uses the in-built orientation sensor in the android phone in order to provide the pitch and yaw info in real-time. Nice.. If you all the time wanted to be died in a plane crash.

Car Safety: if you have met with an accident the emergency alarm in your android phone will blow up. If this doesn’t happen within 1 min, car safety will be sending SMS with the GPS coordinates and the address where accident took place to a pre-determined number. Doesn’t works in the sleep modes at few phones. It uses the accelerometer of the Android’s phone to identify whether you are met with an accident. If I have drooped my phone the alarm may go off and the messages may sent and this makes some unnecessary troubles. Also this application will be sucking off your battery life.

Pocket Agent: Available at free of cost. This app allows you to contact your agent, view insurance policy information, submit a claim, check balances of State Farm Bank and Mutual Fund accounts, etc. you have to create online, protecting your account with password to file claims with the app. If you did mistype the password 3 times then the app will be locked and invited to make a call to a toll free number to reactivate it.

Instead of doing this you can simply make a call to your agent and you cna discuss.

Time Bandits

My Perfect Egg Timer: available for free. This will calculate the accurate time for boiling the eggs. By taking in to the account of the diameter, temp, and hardness of the egg the app starts an egg timer once the egg is in the boiling water. When the egg is about to be done you will be insisted to take off the egg from the water. This is really a waste of time. You can simply put the egg in a container which consists of water and boil it and take it off within few minutes

GTD Timer: Available at free of cost. Are you getting distracted easily? Or having a long list of jobs but not knowing how to start? The Merlin Mann’s idea might help you. Work for 10 min with full focus in completing a single task. Then have a 2 min break. This application will be timing you for 10 min and then for 2 min.

Try and install a real timer application like MultiTimer which also does the same thing, plus a lot more.

USA TV Guide: this application is also for free. This is claimed to be a time zone based three day TV guide. Actually, it simply opens up the Google Mobile page with the Spanish language.

Wow, if you converse Spanish, now you can look for a real TV guide.

Share your Board: This app available for free. This application is for capturing, processing and sharing up whiteboard data.  Save each idea which is popping up during meeting, a brainstorming conference.  With this application you can photograph and simply share the whiteboard from your office conference.

Alternatively the same thing can be done in a Android Phone. It is called camera.

eScrap Free. This provides the scanning documents with your phone camera. Functions: brightness, Fix geometry, contract. Share the docs with other apps. Limit of the free version: doesn’t support large size. Scanning is limited to 800 x 600 pixels

Actually this application has very less functionality than your phones in built camera and camera app. This is a negative point.

Getting Down to Business

Howtask: Free. This is like a To Do App. You can make a task, label it and assign a date for it. You mail the task or you can modify it or you can delete it. .. and that is all. The 1st task is to install a good app like Gtasks.

Second task: Uninstall the HowTask.

MyLetter-Handwriting on Phone (free): Exercise the MyLetter to make handwriting letter, MMS, notes, etc. full of your personal style. i.e. if your personal style is unreadable and childlike. The interface is uncomfortable and the resulting letter is in just a .png image with poor quality of words..

Why just make a letter on a paper and photograph it and mail the image?

Business Cards (free): shoot a picture of your business cards. Systematize them by organization and persons. The business cards can be zoomed. Find them. Mail them by email. You can also do the same thing using the inbuilt camera in your Android phone.

If you need a constructive way to systematize business cards, Google Goggles can pull out text from the business cards, and then add info to your contacts.

Beauty in the Eye of the App?

Skin Cleanser app: this app is available at a cost of $0.99 which utilizes a explicit sound frewuency and wavelength (yellow colour) form the Imperial Topaz gemstone to aid clean the skin of dark spots, acne scars and sun spots.

Ultimately, an expedient option to soap and water!

Acne cleaner: This is available at a cost $0.99. This uses explicit sound frequency and wavelength (blue colour) from the Lapis Lazuli gemstone to aid clear and detox the skin.

Move over, Proactiv.

Baby ESP Trial (1 week free trial) assists you “track when your baby Sleeps, eats, poops (ESP).”

If you require an Android application for that, possibly you must employ a nanny. Just a notion..

Beauty Weight Test (free): “Women’s Health is your cause for health, weight loss, fitness tips… can pass this baby- blocker test. Um, okay. It affords you with a chart which matches your (metric system) weight and height to let know you if you are overweight, thin or “ideal.”

Eye Brightener: This is available at a cost of $0.99. this uses a explicit frequency and a wavelength ( magenta colour) from the Rose Quartz gemstone to assist decrease the dark circles and bulging eyes.

I deduce it beats holding actual stones on your eyes.

Odds and Ends

Facebook for Android: This app is available at free of cost. This makes it easy for you to share your info with your friends. From your home screen you can share your status updates. Check your inbox, upload images etc.

Actually this functions less than web browser version of Facebook. Just make a bookmarking of the Facebook URL

Man Up! (Enhance Male Power): This is available at a cost of $1.99.  Just by hearing and listening to special brainwaves you can cure sexual dysfunctions which are caused due to stress.

Conceivably you and your mobile phone are spending a bit too much time in concert.

Free Wallpaper Apps that Steals Android mobile Information

A mobile security company said that, “nearly 1 to 4 million Android handset users have downloaded a wallpaper application that steals information from the handset and send them to a Chinese owned web server”

Lookout is a San Francisco based mobile security company said that, several free wallpaper applications that were downloaded to the Android mobile were stealing information like mobile number, text messages, SIM card serial number, voicemail numbers and subscriber identity also referred as International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI).

Android applications are stealing personal information

Those information were transmitted to a server that was identified to be present in north of Hong Kong in the China Guangdong province in the resident of Shenzhen.

Co-founder and Chief technology officer of Lookout, Kevin Mahaffey said that, “Two developers referred as “callmejack” and “IceskYsl@1sters!” created 80 wallpaper applications that has codes that obtains the users’ data and send it to the server”.

Kevin Mahaffey and CEO John Hering during the “App Genome Project” analysed 300,000 apps of Apple’s iPhone and Android mobiles

On Friday, Mahaffey published on the Lookout’s Blog sets of data stealing codes and HTML request code that sends information to a Chinese server, which were identified in the wallpaper apps. He called that app as a malware.

There was no issue till now because of that app. This app was easily found as they were dealing with the IMSI and phone number, which no other would access it. Many developers use third party components without knowing its capability.

Google accepted the statements of Lookout but did not say what action it will take on those developers or to call back the software.

Google earlier announced that there are nearly 70,000 apps available. During the Black Hat, the Lookout displayed ways to hack the Android phones due to a flaw in Linux that was found on Droid X, Droid Incredible and ECO 4G phones.

47 % of free apps were found to be accessing sensitive information and in that 27 % used same stealing code.

Lookout has given free security app for Blackberry, Windows mobile and Android phones that can be got from its site.
